How to Show Up in AI Search (ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI) in 2026

AI answers are the new search results. Learn how AEO and GEO work in 2026 β and the practical steps to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews.
More and more people no longer scroll through ten blue links β they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overview and take the answer they're given. If your business isn't mentioned in that answer, you're invisible to a fast-growing slice of your market. This is where AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) come in. Here's how to win in 2026.
What are AEO and GEO?
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) β optimising your content so answer engines (Google's AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants) pull your content as the answer.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) β getting your brand cited and recommended inside AI chat answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.
Classic SEO gets you ranked. AEO and GEO get you quoted.
1. Let AI crawlers read your site
AI engines can only recommend what they can access. Make sure your robots file allows AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and others), and consider an llms.txt file β a plain-language summary of who you are and what you offer, written for AI systems. (We added exactly this to our own site.)
2. Write content that answers real questions directly
AI loves clear, self-contained answers. For every important question your customers ask:
- Ask the question as a heading.
- Answer it in the first two sentences β plainly, no waffle.
- Then expand with detail, examples and context.
This "answer-first" structure is what gets pulled into AI Overviews and chat answers.
3. Add structured data (schema)
Schema markup (FAQ, Organization, Service, Breadcrumb) tells machines exactly what your content means. It dramatically increases your chance of being used as a source by both Google and AI engines.
4. Build real authority and citations
AI models recommend brands they "trust". That trust is built the same way as SEO authority: genuine mentions, reviews, backlinks, consistent business information across the web, and being talked about on reputable sites. The more consistently your name appears alongside your expertise, the more likely an AI is to name you.
5. Keep your facts consistent everywhere
Your services, location, contact details and key claims should match across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Contradictory information makes AI engines uncertain β and uncertain engines stay silent about you.
6. Test it β literally ask the AI
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and ask the questions your customers would ("best digital marketing agency in Dubai for small business"). See who gets named. That gap between where you are and who's being recommended is your AEO/GEO roadmap.
The bottom line
AI search isn't replacing SEO β it's raising the bar. The businesses that win in 2026 are the ones that are crawlable, answer questions clearly, use structured data, and build real authority. Do that, and you get recommended by the tools your customers now trust most.
